BREAKING NEWS:PSQUARE SAYS HIP HOP WORLD AWARD IS A SHAME

By Niyi Tabiti
Chief Reporter

Psquare, one of Nigeria's most popular hip hop group have come out to describe their inability to pick an award at the hip hop world award as a 'tribal' attack. The group were nominated in 5 different categories but ended up going home with nothing.

This afternoon, http://www.niyitabiti.blogspot.com/ was at the home of the group and they voiced out their bitterness through Jude 'Engee'Okoye, their elder brother and manager. Jude said Ayo Animashun dissapointed them by making sure that only peopleof South West origin (Yoruba) won awards except for Ruggedman,Timaya and 2face Idibia. He alleged that 'Stylee' the song that won the best music video is a trash compared to the 'Do Me' video he did for Psquare.DJ TEE won the award because he shot it.He noted that DJ Tee is the technical director for the award and his wife is also a top official of HipTv, owned by the award organisers. In his words "That award should have been called Yoruba Hip Hop award"

He also alledged that Rugged Man's name was smuggled into the list at the last minute because the name was not on the original long list earlier published in newspapers or magazines.

Efforts to get the award organisers today proved abortive. An industry source who does want his name mentioned disclosed that Psquare should stop crying like babies. They should accept their fate, afterall in the past, they have carted home awards from the same Hip Hop World and nobody said they didn't deserve it.

Comments

  1. THEY ARE JUST A BUNCH OF SORE LOSERS...VERY UNEDUCATED AND LOCAL WAY OF THINKING...
THEY DIDNT WIN BECAUSE THEY WERE PITTED AGAINST THE BEST IN THE GAME AND THE PERSON/S WHO WON WERE THE BEST IN WHATEVER CATEGORY.

THEY NEED TO GROW UP AND DEVELOP THICK SKIN AND QUIT ACTING LIKE THE WHIPPED PUSSIES THAT THEY ARE.AND NOW THEY HAVE JUST STAMPED THE BIG FAT SIGN ON THEMSELVES AS LOSERS.

BETTER GO AND CONCENTRATE ON DELIVERING AN AWARD WORTHY VIDEO OR SONG FOR NEXT YEAR AND STOP COMING UP WITH RETARDED CONSPIRACY THEORIES AS TO WHY YOU DID NOT WIN.

    SILLY LITTLE BOYS.

  2. Look PSquare is rubbish and I stand by it. the game got stepped up when they were making trashy pop like do me..maybe they would stop trying to cause a musical biafran war and go to work on their next album

  3. abeg psquare and their igbotic accent shud shut up make we hear word...luck just happened to shine on them and they r successful but they shudnt push it.i watched them on the yellow carpet boasting that if they can clinch international awards, they MUST cart home awards from the hiphop awards....yoruba awards indeed,so it shud hve been igbo awards?pple and comments like this makes me sick really.

  4. Dude just exposed his ignorance to the whole world. He sounds like Kanye West at the '06 MTV Europe VMA's. SORE LOSER/IGNORAMUS! He needs to get a grip and shut the funk up. Where was his punk a$$ when Psquare won a couple of awards at the same awards show 2yrs or so ago?

  5. These boys should learn to be good losers rather than complaining.it shows that they need to be on top of their game. There is a lot of competition out there and they should stop crying over spilt milk.If people don't win the Grammy's, they don't go about "crying". It's rather sad that they had to play the "tribe" card.I'M HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED!

  6. it think their excuse is a lil bit immature and i don't think they need to go tribal......but hey i still love 'em

  8. Lol...see how many years it took Rihanna to FINALLY get a GRAMMY since all her hits...

P-square should swallow their EGO and keep making music...in 4 more years time they'll clear all the Hip Hop Awards...till then

    What happen to Hausa/northern musicians...Oya, I'm suing...lol!

  10. This reaction is very nausating coming from a group that carted away almost all the wards at the Hip Hip World Award 2006 edition. 'Do me' is a late entry into the music world last year and I wondered why they were nominated in the first place. Every event has its loopholes but such loopholes should not be seen from tribal perspective, lest unity and love will continue to elude us. I'm beginning to be bored by this sectionalist views and approaches to things in this country, most especially by those who should be unifying agents. P-square's comment is not only divisive, it is also immature and unprofessional. I'm waiting for them to leave Lagos (south west) and settle in the East in protest of the 'injustice' meted out to them. Afterall, nobody knew about them until they relocated to the west. What has the East bequeated to them aside being born by Easterners? You were groomed in the North Central and made successful in the South West. Pls, no vex me ooo. Leave ethnicity for ethinicists and music for musicians. Be reminded that music is a universal language, no respecter of colour, race nor creed.

  13. p square should get over themselves...

    they aint al dat..
personally, i always thot they were overrated....
bcos they didnt get awards for once and other people shined, the organisers have suddenly become tribalistic??

they had better up their game and stop singing like a couple of kids in kindergaten. rubbish!

  14. Am still a fan of PSquare, they will do better next time.

    Chineze Osayi.

  15. Why do they have to bring in tribalism, i don't think it is right & they shouldn't even go there becos their fans are not made up of the Ibos only and if they were they (P/Square) would be no where.

I personally did not expect them to pick up any award, excuse me what was so unique about the Do Me I Do You video, it was rubbish and 9ja has gone pass that level, 9ja does not do copy-cat videos.

I am ashamed of that outburst from P/Square, i had more regard for them but obviously i should not and expected them to have taken everything in their stride after all there is going to be more awards & who says they have to win all the time. They should be happy that they were nominated i did not see TY Bello, GT the Guaitarman etc crying & they should not even begin to think that they are better than them & a lot of other unmentioned talents.

    P-SQUARE BE CAREFUL,PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL.

Don't piss your fans off with such petty remarks.

I dont care much for P-Square. I know a great video when I see one and Do Me video was very impressive.

  20. hi
I was at the awards and some of those awards might have been given out for political reasons so i can understand if some people complain

unfortunately, i doubt if PSSUARE shd be the ones complaining.

Im sorry, but did they really expect to win ALBUM OF THE YEAR?
    because..?
and ARTISTE OF THE YEAR? i mean, i wdnt have minded terribly if they won, but DBANJ and TU FACE have also been outstanding artistes
'DO ME' might be an excellently well remixed version of 'Busy Body', but it has not surpassed records held by YAHOOZEE

i can understand their argument for their video winning VIDEO OF TEH YEAR but, TY BELLO who did fantastic work on GREENLAND isnt calling a press conference yet is she?

And, did PSQUARE really, REALLY expect to beat TU FACE for the POP album of the year?
Do they know what Tu Face album sounds like?

We might have spoilt PSQUARE a bit
we love them and think they are fantastic performers but let them not then misconstrue that love for support above others

there were great artistes and songs nominated for those awards and anyone of them would have deserved the gongs; if psquare had won some categories, i am sure that others would have cried foul as well

i can understand their being upset, but at the same time, they need to be careful what they say and how they convey it

soemtimes, winning is more about grace in defeat than the actually win itself

    ReplyDelete
  21. It's okay to think you're the best, but going tribal is another issue.. I guess we should have called it the igbo awards when they won in 2006.
Please, whoever knows them needs to tell them know that they really insulted their fans. The fact that they were nominated shows that they are doing well. The fact that they didn't win shows that they need to step up their game. If you're already at an A, an A won't cut it next time, you need to go to an A plus.
Another thing... I honestly did not think Do me was that great... "I still prefere bizzy buddy remix" any day any time. Just because you use 35mm to shoot the video, you had oyinbos, and you shot it in southafrica does not mean the video was tight! Abeg!

    ~A very disappointed FAN!!!

  22. hey! psquare! they are not musicians..if those boys step into my studio,i'll chase them out..i'm a nigerian born producer based in sa with my own recording outfit...i dont think those boys know what music is..i was in naija in december only to hear their rubbish music flooding the airwaves...na wah oh! good for them..... they gotta wake up!

  23. na wa for all this kain thng. psquare shouldnt have even won jack in that awards, where they were the least with people they were contending with.is their song more popular than olu's yahoozee that won song of the year, or are they better than dbanj who wn artiste of the year, if they are, where is the mtv or mobo awards to show for it. for the best muic video of the year, do me is trashhhhhh compared to stylee. i feel everything just bores down to complex. i think the organisers tried and they should be applauded rather than condemned. come to think of it, ho come it was not a yoruba awards when they went away with 5 awards in 2005. ageg make una go sleep and work harder next time

  24. DID I HEAR THAT JUDE OKOYE AND HIS BROTHERS ARE SULKING THAT THEY WERE NOT HONOURED AT THE HHW AWARDS? THEY SHOULD STOP CRYING LIKE SPOILT BABIES AND WIPE THE TEARS OFF THEIR EYES. AFTER ALL, WHEN THEY WERE CARTING AWAY THE AWARDS IN PREVIOUS EDITIONS, THE OTHER DIRECTORS AND ARTISTES DIDN'T THROW CHEAP AND TRIBAL SHOTS AROUND. THEY GOT THEIR HANDS TO THE TILL AND UPPED THEIR GAMES. MOREOVER, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A DISSERVICE TO OTHER DIRECTORS IF JUDE HAD WON THE AWARD FOR THE JOBS WE KNOW ARE DONE BY THE 'OYINBOS' THEY PAY. AND WHAT WAS JUDE DOING IN THE POOL WITH SEXY LADIES IN ONE OF P-SQUARE'S VIDEOS; DIRECTING OR ENJOYING? HAS JUDE SEEN ICONIC HYPE WILLIAMS IN ANY VIDEO BEFORE? I DOUBT. BUNMI AMOSU

  25. One thing that is very important in this industry is HUMILITY. You gotta be humble.

P Squared needs to remember that they started from somewhere.

Not only that, you never know whose ass you gon have to kiss in the future.

This type of crap is the reason why NIGERIAN ARTISTS NEED PUBLICISTS.

Please FIND A PUBLICIST that will help clean up your image and help you express your dissatisfaction in a professional manner.

Dont get your brother and your friend to FUNK you up publicly.

Look at all the hateration now????

@Bunmi, one can direct a video, and also appear in it. what does him appearing in the vid have to do w/ him not directing it?

  29. @ ED, I am quite surprised that you spoke as you did given the respect that I have for your views but really I have to disagree with you.

Have you seen the stylee video? There is nothing great about it and if anything it is a bit second rate. In my opinion, Do me is a far better video any day. Even if you do not rate the Do me video, there were other videos in the award category that are better than stylee.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's sad to hear P square tribalize HHW Awards, very sad. I personally dont really dig HHW Award organization wise but P Square has NOTHING, I mean NOTHING ORIGINAL beatwise and it'll be shameful for HHW to keep "helping" their not being original with Awards.

I think it's time for them to start being ORIGINAL in their tracks production 'cos it's "GAME OVER" for mediocrity and beat sampling.

My honest and sincere opininon to a group I like.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Busola,,i was not contending the video issue.or what is better or not.e.g,if some american got angry that amy winehouse carted home so many awards at the grammys, and they were so foolish as to voice it out by saying something like she got it because she is british..do you get the line of thought i am coming from?

Anybody from their(PSQUARE) camp saying something so retarded at best and tribalistic at most smacks of a low level of intelligence.in 2008 who cares wether the people winning awards are ibo, yoruba, tapa or edo?

And for them to have gone as far as saying something bordering on tribe, undermines the selection/nomination process and the final judgement as to who carts home the awards.are they trying to say HHW target just yorubas then?
times when they won awards how many yoruba or any other artistes cried foul?

i really dont care how good their videos are, truth is,in this game you CANNOT win every time.and days you dont win they should learn to S.T.F.U,be gracious losers OR GO SIT IN A CORNER LIKE THE LITTLE BOYS THAT THEY ARE AND QUIT TRYING TO BE THE POOR MANS KANYE WEST!!

  32. In the 'TOP 12 SONGS OF 2007' special edition of the 'NIGERIAN CHART SHOW' shown on syndicated network stations in Nigeria and on international cable stations weekly, 'STYLEE' was chosen as the number 1 song for 2007 for having a great video, MASSIVE airplay, HEAVY rotation on tv, radio, nightclubs and parties, originality and STAYING POWER. As the producers of the show, we harped on the citeria for the voting pattern and why it won. The reactions we got hours after the broadcsat was tumultous from many folks who felt PSQUARE should have won. How myopic, we said! 'DO ME' was released in November 2007 AND COULD NOT POSSIBLY WIN THE SONG OF THE YEAR!That same mindset could be what the HHWA panel used in deciding DJ TEE as the best director, regardless of whether any musical video was shot on the 35mm format or HD. THE CONCEPT for 'STYLEE' is beautiful and depicted the message of the song juxtaposed tro 'DO ME' which has a great video, no doubt, but had a stereotypical worn-out concept of dancing girls in a typical night club[ forget the format!] Jude Okoye CANNOT really be termed a professional director as he LEARNT ON THE JOB compared to DJ TEE who read FILM/ CINEMATOGRAPHY as a course. Education and proficiency counts at the end of the day. There might be some merits in the allegations of nepotism proferred by JUDE but as gleamed from the reactions, adding tribal colouration to it smacks of sour grapes! As for the HHWA, shorn of all its glitz and glamour, the awards categories and eventual vetting of the final votes in future should be overhauled. Yes, people will scream and shout over contentious results[ you cabnnot please everybody] but commonsense dictates that a listening ear never does anyone no harm. It's all for the greater glory of the Nigerian music industry. 'nuff said!

  33. Hello All,
Am so disappionted on what Psquare actually said that the award was being tribalised, Hey guys you really disappointed,I am a fan of P-square anyday but with this comment,This is rather too too bad. Well I can blame you much as an adage says that I cant be seeing you winning and I should be Happy with It, But try to caution your words Next time.

  34. Hey guys, take it easy on PSQUARE, I mean, by now they should be thinking they are Demi gods, considering the attention they've been getting for a while now.
Despite the fact that I love the optical quality of the "do me" video(basically because it was shot by oyinbos), I really don't see much sense in expecting an award for getting a group of half naked, hot South Afican girls to wriggle like snakes caught in a hunters trap! I think the song/video would have done a lot better if it had a message.

whether we admit it or not
the facts are amazing , the relations here and there, the fishy things that went on here and there. May be P2 is childish but they have a right to be angry. any way they are making the money. what i cannot understand is how stylee could have won over Do me.
That Stylee is so local compared to DO ME, the proof was that DO me was the african Count down number one For over a month, But Stylee did not survive more than a week on MTV base , now beat that !!!

  38. ehm, to be sincere, p-square do not take losing likely, however nobody does, for them to make comments like that does not make them sorelosers but simply hurt.Consider the sleepless nights and the efforts they put to being the best which no one can dispute because they are the best. They did contribute to nigeria's hip hop industry, making it what it is today, so i honestly don't blame them and their reactions to this, though they shouldn't have said what they said.

  40. I cant believe dat people are actually saying dis about p square, they are worth it and they ought to win an award, even more than one. U can say that the lyrics of STYLEE may beat the DO ME, but you cant simply compare the video. STYLEE cant stand beside DO ME. Theres no way that any planned thing wont have a little bit of politics in it and dats what i tink happened. Sure, they maybe cryin about it like small boyz, but i guess dats how much it meant to dem and how painful it was 4 dem to accept it and i realli feel for them cuz i luv there album and i love p square. I dont like what wat people are sayin about them, just try putting urself in that position, spending so much on the video and recieving nothing back for ur efforts

I got a call from one of encomium’s big guy who had read my comments on ayeni blog and was seeking my opinion on the award and I quickly responded with the same comment I made on the blog; read it on ayenithegreat.wordpress.com and I told him I was going to speak about Award_name_maniacs (craze that comes with awards…)

Since 2007 when I got acquainted with attending social awards …to cut the long story short
2007 Hip Hop World Award….PSQUARE carted five award …The Award was Nicknamed P-square hip-hop world award
Nigerian Music Awards 2007….the same story goes for obiwon…how old is he? / Music? For him to have won best male voice of the decade compare to his contenders
Nigeria Music Video award….nicknamed olori-oko awards when the musical group” infinity” carted all the awards…
Future award 2008… we have progress report of Nobel Igwe compare to other professionals why did he not receive the award he was nominated for… no be me talk am oooo.but I buy the idea sha…
Hip Hop world award 2008…”nicknamed Yoruba music award” since most of those that won where from the western part of the country.

Nigerians… I no sabi speak English or write article ooo but I reserved my comments…
    Other award organizers take note…
Pls. join ARISE where we go to awards and audit the final log sheet of winners before they are announced.

anyway, to wind down my incoherence psquare or their mouthpiece should go and sit down n shut up. kanye got no respect for doing the same thing n neither did nelly furtado. so y should they?....n who r they to talk abt "tribal"? they are easterners based in the north who got famous in the south-west. one would think they'd be the ones shouting ONE NIGERIA

  55. i am not totally in support of the comment by psquare and its management about the hip-hop awards. But i must admit that the criteria for selecting the nominees and eventual winners over the years has called for questions not only about the(hip-hop)awards but also other awards in the country. We shud eshew nepotism and ensure that there is credibility and integrity among the panel of judges or mode of selecting winners.

  56. P-Square is telling the truth. I don't know why the Yorubas are too tribalistic. They don't fail to favour their fellow Yorubas in anything they do. They even take their tribalism and nepotism to the church. How can a whole P-Square not win a single award, rather the awards were carted home by the amature noise makers. Thats a very clear case of sheer discrimination and marginalization. SHAME UNTO YOU Hip Hop World.
