Guinness®, the number one stout in Nigeria and arguably Nigeria’s most beloved beer, has stepped in on behalf of the millions of football loving fans in Nigeria to announce a football event that will take place in Abuja in June 2011.

In response to the growing calls for the Super Eagles to play a world class fixture against one of the top football nations in the world, Guinness® has negotiated on behalf of the fans with FIFA, the Nigerian Football Federation and the Argentine Football Association to bring the South American giant to play the Super Eagles in Nigeria on Wednesday 1st June as a FIFA accredited game.

Guinness® The Match will be the event of a lifetime that no true football fan should miss as Guinness® provides the opportunity for Samson Siasia and Nigeria’s Super Eagles to compete with Argentina - one of the world’s greatest football nations, renowned for its touch of genius and creative play. It is a nation that has produced some of the world’s greatest ever football talent and was the country that knocked Nigeria out of the FIFA World Cup 2010.

These will include being an assistant coach, official photographer, official TV and radio commentator as well as the chance to get behind the scenes, meet the players and more besides.

Speaking about the announcement of Guinness® The Match, Super Eagles Coach, Samson Siasia said:  “I thank Guinness® for stepping in and making this happen for Nigeria.  The fans should be grateful to Guinness® for this opportunity.

“It’s now down to us and the fans to make sure we show that we are a football nation worthy of respect and have the potential to succeed on football’s world stage.

“We have played Argentina three times at senior national level in the past – they have been a formidable opponent.  They too are building for their future and from this game we can benchmark our future heroes against their future heroes.  But we are ready for the challenge and relish it”.

The announcement of Guinness® The Match was made by Guinness Nigeria plc Managing Director, Mr. Devlin Hainsworth, at an exclusive event held at The Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.  It was attended by leading figures from the world of football including many Super Eagles heroes, Mr Musa Amadu, Secretary General of the Nigerian Football Federation and Mr Hernan Tofoni, Head of International Relations of the Argentine Football Association as well as the ambassador for the Super Eagles  Nwankwo Kanu.

In accepting the Guinness® The Match Challenge on behalf of Argentina, Mr Hernan Tofoni, Head of International Relations of the Argentine Football Association said:  “Both teams represent great nations with armies of passionate fans. Guinness® The Match will be a challenge for both teams. We are not complacent and intend to keep our 100% undefeated record”.
