I heard one of the funniest things in my life on radio this morning.I was listening to a radio programme on my way to keep an appointment this morning.Yes,i remember, the programme is called talk naija. The presenter said repeatedly that University of Ife was re-named
after Chief Obafemi Awolowo because he hailed from OYO STATE.
The truth is,Late Obafemi Awolowo was born, lived and died in Ikenne, Ogun State. He was an Ogun State indigene.Even primary school pupils know this because Awolowo's invaluable contributions to the development of Nigeria.
I thought it was a slip of tongue, she repeated it so many times, supported by a male voice. What we hear on radio these days self.
Another bombshell, the presenters said how can UNILAG be named after MKO Abiola when he is not an indigene of Lagos State? Someone need to help this presenters out their ignorance.
First, must someone come a state before he can have something named after him or her? Secondly,Is UNILAG a state university? It is a federal institution and only the Federal Government can control it.Let me ask the presenter, was Murtala Muhammed, who had the International airport, Lagos named after him an indigene of Lagos state?
The presenters also shocked me when they said Oba of Lagos was not consulted when the name of University of Lagos was about to be changed to Moshood Abiola University. I ask, why must the Oba be consulted on such matters? Is it in law? When International Airport in Lagos was re-named after Murtala Muhammed, was the former Oba of Lagos, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, consulted?
Good, people don't like what Jonathan has done by naming UNILAG after MKO Abiola because of some reasons but the kind of argument posed by these presenters are nothing to write home about!
Personally,I strongly would have wanted the National Stadium Surelere renamed after Bashorun MKO Abiola, a man regarded as the pillar of sport in Africa durning his life time.
